From October 2019, the ATO has been focusing on their bulk Australian business number (ABN) cancellation program. This program helps to ensure the integrity of the Australian Business Register (ABR). Is your ABN at risk?
The ATO aims to cancel ABN’s for businesses that they believe are no longer carrying on an enterprise. ABN holders that may be at risk of having their ABN cancelled include those that:
- have stopped reporting business income or expenses;
- have provided the ATO with no other indications that they may be in business.
Excluded from the bulk cancellation program are those businesses that are known to be renting out property, or are receiving income elsewhere.
If the ATO cancels your ABN as part of this bulk cancellation process, and you need it in the future, you can easily reapply and will receive the same ABN if your business structure is the same.
If your ABN is cancelled and you’re not satisfied with the ATO’s decision, you can contact the ATO directly, or call us on 9887 8751 and we can look into it for you.
