Have you ever woken up on a work day and thought, ‘I just don’t want to get out of bed today… why should I?’ I know I have! What’s motivated you in the end to actually throw off the doona and jump (or, let’s be real… roll) out?
Whatever the motivation, that’s your WHY; it is, as Simon Sinek, marketing consultant, author, motivator and visionary, so eloquently puts, ‘the purpose, cause or belief that inspires you to do what you do’.
Every business knows what they do and how they do it, but few know why.
Knowing your WHY – irrespective of whether you’ve been in business for eons, have just started out or are still at the drawing board phase – will help fulfil you, keep your business aims and objectives on track, attract and retain employees who are the ‘right fit’ and encourage clients to get on board.
Our friends at Corvus have been been thinking about their WHY and, as we approach the end of the year and enter into the festive season, they challenge you to do the same. And not reactionary, as an afterthought (‘why did we do that?’ or ‘why are we still doing it this way?’) but proactively, as a top priority (‘why are we in business?’, ‘why do our employees want to work for us?’, ‘why do our clients want to engage us?’). “Why?”, you may ask…
Well, your business’ WHY is foundational, like the concrete slab of a house. It’s solid, immovable and enduring. By all means, you can renovate the house (e.g. adjust your marketing strategy or change your policies and procedures), but the foundation stays the same.
Many businesses start with a WHY, but only the best sustain it, year in year out and give their employees a reason to get behind it. We think that Virgin Australia nailed their WHY in their latest campaign, ‘We are the Uptimists’. Check it out here. As we all know, passion (like this) is infectious. The key to using that passion to your advantage is knowing your WHY and communicating that story to your staff and clients.
If you know why you come to work and are passionate about what you do, your staff will follow suit. If your employees ‘get’ your WHY and their values align with it, they’ll help work towards your shared vision and put all of their blood, sweat and tears into it – not because they have to, but because they want to; they can see the value in it.
